From Vietnam to Baghdad: Tanisa Rice Paper Wins Over Iraqi Consumers
In Baghdad, an online store specializing in health products just added something new to its lineup: Vietnamese rice paper. Not because it's trending on social media, but because the product checks every box their customers look for every day: gluten-free, no preservatives, plant-based. Behind this is a small but concrete example of how a familiar Vietnamese product, made at the Tanisa rice paper factory in Tay Ninh, found its footing in an entirely new market.
A New Market, A Familiar Story
This time, the customer is an online retailer in Baghdad, Iraq, specializing in health and wellness products. They've added Tanisa rice paper to their e-commerce platforms, alongside other products aimed at consumers focused on nutrition and clean living.
This isn't the first time a Vietnamese rice product has found its way into a market it had never reached before. But the question each time stays the same: what makes a traditional Vietnamese product fit the needs of a market so far removed, culturally, from its origin?
Why a Health Products Retailer Chose Vietnamese Rice Paper
The answer comes down to the ingredients themselves. Rice paper made at the Tanisa rice paper factory is produced from rice flour, tapioca starch, and salt. No wheat, no preservatives, no GMOs. That's exactly the kind of profile a health products retailer needs for something to earn a spot on their shelves.
For consumers following a gluten-free diet or prioritizing plant-based foods, rice paper offers an alternative to wheat-based wraps, without sacrificing convenience in use.
What the Baghdad Market for Rice Paper Shows
Rising demand across online sales channels
According to the customer, the product has seen strong interest and high demand across their online sales pages. Current retail pricing is also at a level they're happy with.
Positive feedback on product quality and support from the Tanisa team
Beyond the sales numbers, the customer also shared positive feedback on product quality and the support they've received from the Tanisa team throughout the partnership. For a retailer building out a health products catalog, having a supplier that responds quickly and stays closely engaged often matters just as much as the product itself.
Iraq Joins Tanisa's Export Footprint Across 30+ Countries
The Baghdad story is one part of a market expansion journey that's spanned more than a decade for Tanisa Foods. Founded in 2015 by Estelle Thu, who grew up in Tay Ninh, a region long tied to traditional rice paper craftsmanship, the Tanisa rice paper factory now exports to more than 30 countries, including the US, Europe, Australia, Japan, and South Korea.
The foundation for this expansion is a certification system built over years of working with markets that have strict requirements: FSSC 22000, ISO 22000:2018, FDA registration in the US, KFDA-equivalent standards in South Korea, and Halal certification (issued by IFNAS, the Islamic Food and Nutrition Awareness Society). That same experience meeting strict standards in markets like the US and South Korea is what allows the Tanisa rice paper factory to maintain consistent quality as it expands into newer markets like Iraq, even as each market comes with its own characteristics and requirements.
Today, Tanisa supplies retail chains including H-Mart (USA), Don Quijote (Japan), Homeplus (South Korea), and Foodland (Australia), along with e-commerce platforms such as Amazon US, Coupang, and Wildberries.
TANISA FOODS JSC, a strong brand in the market for the production and distribution of specialty products (rice paper, rice noodles...) and spices (seasoning) which exported to some countries such as USA, France, South Korea, Japan, Russia, Brunei...
