Tanisa Rice Paper: From Vietnam to Philippine Supermarkets

A container of Tanisa rice paper just reached the Philippines, now on shelves at Metro and Gaisano. Discover the certifications behind this export success.

A container of Tanisa rice paper has just left Vietnam, bound for Manila, Philippines. Expected to arrive in early September, the shipment will be stocked on shelves at Metro, Gaisano, and several other supermarket chains across the Philippines. For Filipino consumers, rice paper, a thin wrapper made from rice flour used to roll food, may still be an unfamiliar name, but the way it's eaten is anything but foreign.

The Journey of Tanisa's Rice Paper Container to the Philippines

The shipment departed on August 25, with Manila as its destination. This is not a small trial shipment but an official export run, large enough to be distributed through modern retail systems.

What stands out is that the Philippines is already accustomed to Vietnamese agricultural products at scale. The country is currently Vietnam's largest rice import market, with around 87% of the Philippines' rice imports coming from Vietnam. When consumers already trust Vietnamese rice in their daily meals, a rice-based product like rice paper starts from a much stronger footing than introducing an entirely new food to the market.

On top of that, the Philippines has lumpia, its own traditional spring roll. Wrapping a filling and eating it with dipping sauce is not an unfamiliar experience. Vietnamese rice paper, in that sense, reads more like a close variation than a hard-to-approach foreign dish.

How Tanisa Rice Paper Is Being Received in the Philippines

The fact that a Vietnamese rice paper factory was chosen as a supplier by chains like Metro and Gaisano is worth noting. Modern retail systems typically run fairly strict supplier vetting, from quality certification records to the ability to deliver consistently. Being selected for shelf placement, rather than just a trial consignment, signals that the partner has judged the product fit for mass-market sale.

The way rice paper is used is also expanding in ways that work in the product's favor. Beyond traditional fresh spring rolls, rice paper is now used to make crispy fried snacks, quick-eat wraps, and fusion-style dishes. This trend isn't limited to Vietnam. On TikTok and Instagram, rice paper variations, from Korean-style spicy noodle rolls to crispy fried rice paper, are spreading across Southeast Asia. For a market already familiar with rolled dishes like the Philippines, this kind of versatility makes it easier for rice paper to work its way into everyday meals, rather than staying confined to the Asian foods aisle of a supermarket.

Why Tanisa Has the Capability to Export Into Demanding Markets

For a food shipment to clear customs and reach shelves in a foreign market, the manufacturing facility has to meet several layers of certification. The Tanisa factory currently holds FSSC 22000, ISO 22000, Halal, FDA, and KFDA certifications. These are the certifications typically required for exporting into markets with strict food safety controls, such as the United States (FDA) or South Korea (KFDA).

Tanisa currently exports to more than 35 countries, including a number of markets considered demanding in terms of quality standards. That experience working with such markets is also what allows the factory to adapt quickly when expanding into a new market like the Philippines, from packaging and preservation during transit to meeting the specific requirements of each retail system.

Tanisa's Product Range in International Markets

Alongside rice paper, its flagship product, Tanisa also produces dried rice vermicelli (bun) and rice noodles (pho). Having multiple product lines gives the factory more flexibility when working with distributors who want to bring several Vietnamese dishes onto the same shelf, rather than carrying just a single product.
